Grades 6-8

Our school is located in what used to be a small town in Oklahoma. It is now surrounded by a much larger city. While parents seem to think of this as a safe, sleepy town, students face typical urban challenges such as drugs and sporadic violence. Our school has been in "lock down" twice in the past two years: last year when three armed robbers opened fire 50 feet away from our middle school and this year when police got in a shoot-out with a drug-crazed man a block from our school. (The man was the estranged father of a student, and the father was killed in the shoot-out.) We attract a large number of transfer students from surrounding districts, because we have a good reputation. These students tend to be very middle class and come from fairly well-educated homes. But our in-district students tend to be low-income and are increasingly from families who speak languages other than English at home.

This coming fall, all of our 8th grade students will be required to take a nine-weeks course on the Constitution and Bill of Rights. While it's easy to find copies of these online, it's very hard to find kid-friendly explanations of what this all means. I cannot stand the idea of kids hating to study our Constitution! I have looked for free sources of kid-friendly Constitution booklets, but have found nothing. (The local Bar Association tried to help. They sent me a huge box full of tiny print booklets of the Constitution and Bill of Rights -- all with no explanations, graphics, or illustrations. Yuck!)

"The Constitution Translated for Kids" has pages divided into two sections. It gives the original wording of the Constitution and Bill of Rights on the left side of the page and then explains it in simple language on the right side of the same page. The reading level is for middle school age students. The fact that it is hardback means that it will last for many years! By ordering two class sets, the two of us who are teaching this class can both use them with our classes. This book gets RAVE REVIEWS. As one reviewer wrote, "This book is a great asset in helping your children understand the difficult, and sometimes confusing, language of the Constitution. It should be made available to any school-aged child."

Your donation of these books will make it possible for our 8th graders to UNDERSTAND our U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights. Please help me build strong citizens who value their heritage of democracy.
