Rainy Days And Mondays Always Get Me Down

My students need new activities and games including Locktagons, checkers, an animal variety pack, tic-tac-toe, marble run, stickable bricks, and bean bag chairs so when they are stuck indoors for recess there is plenty for them to do.

Have you ever been stuck indoors with nothing to do? Imagine being a seven or eight year-old in that position. A fifteen-minute recess can seem like an eternity! I am a second grade teacher who wants to teach her students the joy of creative play without a computer! Indoor recess is an excellent time for students to practice social skills such as sharing, taking turns and patience. Many times, I see students use computers to occupy their free time, so I feel it is my "duty" to teach students the value of creative and imaginative play through games. I want to provide my students the games and activities that will allow them "hands on" learning experiences.

Living in Iowa, my students are used to having regular indoor recess during the frigid winter months, as well as in the rainy springtime. This may seem like a fun opportunity, but our classroom activity cupboard is bare! The games that are there are almost ten years old, so they are missing many pieces and are in disrepair. During indoor recess, I often hear students lament, "There is nothing to do!" As a teacher, I pour most of my extra funds into purchasing educational equipment for my classroom. With the current economy and being from a high poverty area in Iowa, I cannot ask my families to chip in for games and activities when they are already burdened to simply provide school supplies.

Donors who chose to contribute to this project will help to purchase board games and blocks. They will also help purchase manipulative toys such as locktagons, animal and bug models for imaginative play. I have also included storage containers to help preserve the supplies, as well as a new bean bag chair for students to lounge during their "free" time.

Contributing to this project will greatly ease the financial burden of supplying my students with the tools they need to play like children used to play before the computer age!
