Visualize this scene. In a class of 35 students, 25 are reading quietly. Five pretend to read and five maintain their claims that they will not read. As you can imagine, these self proclaimed "reader-haters" often disrupt the reading of others. Past incident have included books thrown across the room at "nerds!" as well as more colorful outbursts. I see through the defiance and see students who need a different type of book to interest them in reading. As a tenth grade English teacher, I push ALL my students to raise their reading levels before the rigorous state exam and Regents exam next year. Right now, students are an average of three years behind in their reading levels. Without improving their reading level, they will not pass. They need your help!!! My past experience has shown that all students will read if they like the book. Graphic novels are an easy way to transition from comic books and colorful newspapers that my students love. My students truly need more graphic novels like "Watchman," one of Time magazines 100 best novels. You can help! With your generosity, my students can raise their reading levels significantly this year. They just need captivating, compelling books, especially graphic novels. They're ready - just give them them this last tool for success!
