Middle School Girls Love Technology- Creating Animation

My students need nine 2GB flash drives to learn how to create animation. While the Alice animation program is free (donated by Carnegie Mellon University) the students need a flash drive to download the program and as a place to keep their animations. Our school's computers/server do not have enough free memory for the students to download to the computer.

Allow middle school girls the opportunity to explore computer science by learning how to create animation! I teach 7th grade students and 8th grade students technology in a rural school in North Carolina. I am the faculty advisor for our after school Technology Club. I allow the students to choose what technology experiences they would like to explore each year. In past years, the technology club chose to have a morning news show, produce an American Idol type talent show, enter the C-Span student-cam video contest, and create animated movies and games using the free Alice software donated by Carnegie Melon University. Our field trips have included visiting tv stations, movie making exhibits, Duke University’s virtual reality room and different technology related schools such as the Middle College of Entertainment Technology.

I teach in a rural county where only 1 out of 8 people go to college. 20% of my students do not have computers at home. My school is the first middle school in our County to offer animation to middle school students. Two main problems affect the success of introducing this technology to my middle schools students, awareness and cost. Many people may not be aware that less than ½ percent of women choose computer science as a career. Studies show that by middle school most girls decide computer science is not for them based on many reasons including biased impressions from tv that computer science is for “nerds”. While male middle school students flock to the technology club it is harder to attract female middle school students. Another problem is that although the Alice animation software is free (donated by Carnegie Melon University) students need a flash drive to download the software and to store their animations. Our school’s computers/server do not have enough memory for the students to use this program.

If you have seen or read “The Last Lecture” by Randy Pausch then you may have already heard about the free Alice animation program that he helped create so that girls and minorities would be drawn into the exciting world of computer science. I would like to have a “girls” Alice animation summer class preferably during one of the August teacher’s work days but it can be held later depending on when funding is received. My students need 9 2GB flash drives to learn how to create animation. While the Alice animation program is free (donated by Carnegie Mellon University) the students need a flash drive to download the program and as a place to keep their animations. I feel by having a group of girls learn how much fun animation is that they would more likely come to the after school technology meetings once school starts and not feel overwhelmed by all of the boys in attendance. By purchasing flash drives, you will allow 9 girls to experience the thrill of creating their own animation and sampling computer science to see if it is an avenue they want to explore in future classes in high school or college.

Your support can open the doors of computer science to middle school students. In 8th grade they have to decide what classes they want to take in high school and without having some sort of computer science experience many of them in this rural county do not pursue it in high school which almost guarantees that they do not have the skills they need to pursue it in college. Knowledge is Power! Please empower these girls to explore a possible career in computer science.
