My students need 24 pairs of rhythm sticks plus the Multicultural Rhythm Sticks Fun CD to help guide them. My students need the Dr. Jean Sing and Read CD plus books to integrate reading and listening with music. My students need a portable, battery operated iPod dock in order to play our music during whole group time.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In a year, between 23-30 high-need kindergarten students call me teacher. Some of them have parents in jail, some of them have parents working 3 jobs, but for 8 hours a day they can depend on learning in a safe, stable, and predictable environment.

Since my students attend a science magnet school (one reason is to help our science TAKS scores), they have no art class, physical education class, or music class. Other than some children's Cd's I purchased and different clapping rhythm games we play, my students are being deprived of music education.

I purchased an Ipod dock, but it has to be plugged in. There is only one plug in my classroom and it is across the room from our carpet, where we do most of our singing. If I had a portable one up front in my classroom, it would make classroom management so much easier. Also, with instruments my students could explore a whole new side of music. Lastly, we could use the song books and Cd's during small group work stations. This would allow for music to be a part of every facet of the classroom.

You will make it possible for my impoverished students to experience music in a way that is both fun and will help with reading. You will be making school a warmer, more welcoming place for these kiddos.
