This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Teenagers need a creative outlet in school! I teach government and economics to students in a very low income and high need district. My students mostly come from families who can not afford to send their students to school with the basic supplies necessary for their education.
Our school is very small and we are unable to provide students with art and music classes. This limits my students when it comes to creative outlets in school. I truly enjoy helping my students use their imaginations,to be creative, and to display their knowledge in artistic ways. My students love to get out the construction paper and glue to put projects together to show what they have learned about a particular topic.
Whether designing Grand Opening posters to go along with their business proposals for a business they created in Economics or decorating the classroom with posters on famous people who shaped our nation's government, my students love to be creative. Unfortunately, our school budget does not allow for enough of the supplies my students need to enhance their creative outlets.
School needs to be about more than just reading and writing about what a student has learned. I want to tell my students more often to "Show me what you've learned" and not just "tell me what you've learned."
With the donation of some very basic art supplies, my students would have the opportunity to brighten up our classroom with projects that both show and tell what they have learned. Having these art supplies would help engage my students in the learning process even more. I have many students who want to go on to college to be graphic designers or work in the fashion industry. Allowing them to be creative in class would help foster their interests and prepare them for college and beyond.
Your help would bring a lot of color to my students' lives. School would not be just black and white as they see in their textbooks. Government and Economics would now be full of color for my students with endless possibilities.
