Calculators for College

My students need 10 graphing calculators to move on to advanced math and attain skills necessary to succeed in competitive colleges.

Although our school's two math teachers are experienced and talented, last year it was difficult for them to substantially increase our students math achievement scores: after all, our school had no calculators. I teach Algebra II and Geometry to a set of talented, at-risk students. The students face many obstacles; 100% qualify for free lunches, and the area in which our school is situated is rife with gang violence. Still, it has always been our goal to push our students beyond these obstacles and into competitive universities. As one can imagine, it is quite difficult to gain admission to a university under such circumstances. Especially when one does not have calculators.

Still, we are succeeding. This year, almost 100% of our graduating seniors are attending a community college or a university. This statistic is a sharp increase from years before our current teaching staff, when 1%--yes, 1% (1 student)--graduated from a college. We hope to improve this statistic by bringing in the most advanced technology we possibly can. Our classrooms are finally equipped with LCD projectors, dictionaries, and thesauri. We just received a few laptops. Now, we are seeking graphing calculators to increase our students' math scores, scores which are dismally low according to ACT reports. Without the ability to use a calculator, our students score, at highest, 15 on the math section, but anywhere from 15-31 on the reading section.

Graphing calculators will change this. We have developed a curriculum that will teach our students how to use these calculators and increase their achievement scores. All we need now, of course, are the calculators themselves.

That's where you come in. Please know that our school is currently reaching record standardized test scores, and that we have a large cohort of Teach For America teachers and talented teachers who are absolutely dedicated to our students' success. The graphing calculators will, of course, be used for years to come and will benefit hundreds of students each year. This project will raise our students math ACT scores by at least 3 points, by our estimate, and such a score can push our students beyond community colleges and into institutions that can teach them how to effect real change.
