Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students are strong minded middle schoolers who live in a very high poverty rural community. One subject I teach is 8th grade American History.

A large part of our community is often at the hands of the law. The local sheriff's website has more hits than Google. I am compelled to help them learn about the Constitution, and the impact that it has in their lives (and their community members' lives).

My students will use the book "Words We Live By" to make real world connections to the Constitution because it uses a highly accessible style of annotation. There are contemporary pictures and side notes on many famous Supreme Court cases that students will learn about. The "Fascinating Facts" about the Constitution book has a very high interest level for young readers due to its size. It is a small book that easily fits in a pocket but it contains facts that are quickly memorable.

By granting support for my project you can have the confidence that the supplies will be used for many years in an educational setting that has high standards in spite of a setting of generational poverty. You will make it possible for my students to think about the Constitution with a critical mind, with a thinking mind. As the author Linda Monk stated, "..the Constitution is not self-enforcing...(it)depends upon citizens for its support". Sometimes this comes in the form of supplies!
