Mrs. Lynch Andrews High School
Andrews, SC Grades 9-12

I remember my first sketchbook. I won it when I was in the eighth grade during a drawing at a summer arts camp I attended. I felt like a real artist and I had proof. I remember thinking about the slides and pictures I had seen of famous sketchbook entries from artists like Leonardo Da Vinci - it is amazing to this day to me that one little sketchbook could make someone feel so important. My drawings were more important just because they had a home. I want my students to get that same experience. I want to be able to provide each student in my class with a bound sketchbook to record all their thoughts and ideas in during my class-and hopefully after. By providing them with a sketchbook I can expect from them a drawing each day and at least a comment that shows they are thinking about what they are drawing or working on. Many of my students cannot afford a sketchbook now and some use stapled computer paper or even a one-subject lined notebook. These make-shift sketchbooks work fine but sometimes pages get lost or torn out, the pages get used for other classes and soon the drawings are lost to an endless sea of math notes. By giving each child a permanent place to house their thoughts, ideas, and dreams I believe they will begin to see the importance behind expressing these things in a way other than writing it out or vocally. Remember, a picture is worth a thousand words.
