I teach 3rd graders in a school which has a wide range of abilities, needs, and are from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds.

Because of the variety of students I have, many students do not have background information or experiences needed to create "hooks" in their brain for future information to associate with. Because of this retention of information is often difficult.

Our curriculum in science includes a major unit on rocks. Having the fossil kits will help my students understand the unit better as well as offer an opportunity for enrichment. The unit by itself is rather dry and the students have difficulty in seeing any relevance in studying rocks. Having the fossil kits will help the students make a connection between what they are learning in their science unit with the formation of the earth and the preservation of times past. Hopefully this will plant the seed for students to go into geology and other scientific fields.

Your donation will make it possible for my students to have a "hands on" approach to a topic that can be rather dry. Students love to learn by getting "in touch" with the concepts and these kits will not only reinforce their present curriculum, the kits will also bring alive eras from the past.
