"I teach math at a wonderful charter school in New Jersey and have the privilege of teaching the best kids in the world. Our school is a wonderful place for students to grow, but they struggle with focus and organization. Many of my students have chaotic lives away from school, and they find it hard to follow along and learn from books and lectures. I try to make everyday in our classroom about movement, experiments, and partnerships.

My students come to school with plenty of enthusiasm and compassion but very little else. While they are provided with the necessities for school, they are missing out on many resources that would make their learning much more fun and much easier. None of my students have resources outside of school to help them. Most have no safe/quiet place to do homework, and when they call me in the evening to get homework help, it sounds like a train station in the background. Many also have younger siblings to take care of at night and are forced into being adults at a young age. With all of this going on in their lives, it is very difficult for my students to learn unless the lessons are very captivating and bring to light situations that they care about.

My students need a computer which is current and can process the information we need in a timely manner. I have managed to bring a lot of technology into the classroom and show my students what is out there for them, but too often the sites we want and the games I could use in class do not load or will not work properly. In addition to accessing the Internet, I also like the students to take pictures of their work and to post what they are working on to the school website. Our current computer lab is difficult to get into because it is so busy. By having our own laptop in the room we would be able to share more of our knowledge with the community.

By purchasing a laptop for our classroom you are giving my students a great resource for learning math. You are also giving me a great tool for teaching lessons in a more interactive and interesting way. By reviewing our math content using jeopardy or online games the students are excited about testing and always ready to do math. Additionally, my students will be excited and motivated by the idea of posting their work online and being able to access information when we want to, and not just when the lab is available.
