Wilmington, NC Grades 6-8

Our school is a highly diverse, student centered middle school where high student achievement, coupled with personal responsibility and good citizenship, are a daily focus. Our school serves nearly 1,000 students from all walks of life. In fact, in addition to providing services for autistic middle school students in our district, our student body also includes an ESL population representing 14 different languages. As such, we are able to prepare our students for the 21st century in an atmosphere that truly embraces diversity.

That said, our school is not without challenges, many of which are financial. Like most schools, in these tough economic times, our school is facing countless budget cutbacks including those that directly impact students. Whether due to increased class sizes or reduced funding for basic supplies, we’re all feeling the pinch as our district has had to trim over 3 million dollars from its budget. So as the librarian, I find myself constantly trying to provide opportunities for my students that will instill in them a love of reading, without breaking the bank.

One such opportunity involves the young adult novel, "The Lightning Thief" by Rick Riordan in which middle schooler Percy Jackson discovers that not only are the Greek gods real and alive, but also that Percy himself is actually the son of one of them, Poseidon. This popular and exciting fantasy-adventure novel revolves around Percy’s quest to retrieve Zeus' lightning bolt from Hades, who supposedly stole it. Using Riordan’s novel as a jumping off place, 6th grade students at my school want very much to use podcasting technology to complete a variety of projects that will help them connect the dots between Ancient Greek culture and modern life. Just a few of these projects include podcasted “testimony” in front of the Council of Olympians in which students will provide scientific explanations of numerous Greek myths, podcasted “testimonials” in which students assume the personas of one of the Greek gods and provide their interpretation of how they think these ancient deities would react to modern life, as well as a podcasted soap opera/explanation of the Greek family tree called “As Mt. Olympus Turns.”

Here at our school we’re very used to channeling “MacGyver” when it comes to solving problems with limited access to the necessary tools, but in this case, we desperately 3 digital voice recorders to help us turn our aspirations into a reality. By funding this project, you have the opportunity to be a part of this powerful experience, one that will continue to impact our students, their love of reading and their understanding of important content areas (such as mythology and scientific discovery) as well as the use of Web 2.0 skills, (such as podcasting), for many years to come. Without your assistance, we may not be able to provide this opportunity to our students, but with your help, the diverse student population at our school will have an experience that they will never forget.
