I'm a 4th grade teacher in a rural town in Coastal North Carolina. My class next year will have approximately 23 students from diverse backgrounds. We are a public Title 1 primary school, serving 625 students in grades Pre-K through 4.

Headlines across America talk daily about health issues facing our children - obesity, diabetes, asthma, etc. I want to take a stand against these things that plague our children with my students. I want to teach them about being a healthy kid and developing a healthy lifestyle that will impact them forever.

Weekly Reader is a wonderful weekly publication company that is offering a new component to their literature - Healthy Living! This weekly magazine addresses all the elements of the national healthy living curriculum, including nutrition, exercise, disease prevention and issues facing children today. Time spent in this weekly magazine, along with the daily exercise components and other learning exercise components that I have planned, will set my students on the right path to a healthy life.

What is the greatest gift you can give a child? I believe it is learning that will impact their lives forever. Students are powerful forces in their surroundings, and I am excited about how my students will, in turn, impact others in their community.
