I teach 7th grade language arts in a high poverty/low income school district. Our budget was low before this year and has now been cut drastically. We are in dire need of new novels for our students.

The majority of our students came from extremely dysfunctional families. We are trying to instill a love of reading as a means of escape or release, a way to plan for the future. The students learn about mythology every year in Social Studies and love it. We pride ourselves on teaching across curriculum and with such high interest from the kids, feel that this will help improve reading levels and scores.

My students need 30 hardback Lightning Thief books by Rick Riordan. This book is about a young boy with a single mom, a horrible step-father, who consistently is expelled from schools because of his behavior. He learns that his father is actually one of the 3 top Greek Gods. He is brought into the real world of mythology where he is able to show his true colors and do well. It is a story that many of our students can relate to.

With your help, my students will be privy to new materials which is such a rarity in this district. They will be able to enjoy a new award winning book that has sequels that will let them continue the journey. Help me, help my students love to read.
