My students need 37 different titles of fiction, nonfiction, and multicultural books, including "The Universe (Scholastic First Discovery Series)", "Grandfather Twilight" and "The Snowy Day".

I have the privilege of working with an extremely curious, energetic, group of first graders in a high poverty school. These little ones face challenges beyond their years including homelessness and poverty. Our school has a very diverse population with 11 different languages spoken. A number of students have no one at home who can read with them. Many of the students have no access to books or supplies other than those provided at school. We started using the Reader's Workshop format this year and my students have developed a hunger for literature. There is no greater sound than that of a group of students sharing a laugh over a good Mo Willems' book or the frenzy in their voices as the work on their questioning skills with a great nonfiction book. Unfortunately, our school does not have the resources to provide the variety of culturally diverse, poetry, current fiction and nonfiction titles that can feed their curiosity. WE NEED BOOKS! We need books at different levels and genres to help satiate that hunger. If we can give these little ones the gift of reading and the thirst to know more, there will be no stopping them. These kids are our future and I know given the resources they can change the world.
