Imagine yourself as a 6 year old learning to read English, write a letter, and list fact families while sharing a table with 6 year old versions of Dwight Shrute, Michael Scott, Pam Beesly, Jim Halpert, and other characters from the sit-com, "The Office." Wouldn't you wish for a cubicle? Hello, and welcome to my proposal for privacy partitions which are cardboard screens that are portable, never catch viruses (and can prevent some), freeze up, or send error messages. These screens are a 6 year old's version of a cubicle. With class sizes going up, these partitions are essential for giving students the opportunity to learn independence, self reliance, contemplation, and reflection. In September I will face 22 six year olds, 45% of whom are second language learners in a school that is designated high poverty in a district that rations paper in a state that is 43rd in spending. By June, these students must read 250 words, add and subtract, recognize fractions, the water cycle, and states of matter, recite the Pledge of Allegiance, and sing the national anthem. All of these activities require their undivided attention and disciplined work habits which privacy screens will greatly facilitate. I am also requesting packages of sentence strips which we use for reading, writing, and arithmetic practice. Might you please help us prepare these students for (cubicle) life in the 21st century? And if funded, we will fill your cubicle with pictures and letters of gratitude created in the privacy of our new partitions.
