Next year, I will be starting a program for students with Autism Spectrum Disorders at the middle school level. The support I have received from donors like you helped me build a very successful elementary program...let's take it to the next level! Middle school is often an awkward time in people's lives. For students with Autism and Asperger Syndrome, it can be doubly tough. They don't have the social awareness to understand what's "cool" or appropriate without direct instruction. As a result, many adolescents on the spectrum deal with depression or extreme anxiety. "The Social Skills Picture Book" by Dr. Jed Baker is a wonderful tool for teaching students how to interact with their peers. It presents pictures of real kids in real-life social situations (eating in the cafeteria, participating in cooperative learning, etc.). The pictures are organized into "Do" and "Don't" categories with clear, concise explanations of what works and what doesn't. Once my students have studied the book, we'll create our own with photos taken at our school. These books will serve as a social reference for my students in middle school and beyond!
