Visit the "Past" to work towards "Future". The district I work in has had a period of rapid growth and we struggled to keep up with it. The growth has leveled off but we still are trying to come to terms with it. As an 8th grade reading and language arts teacher, I see my students twice a day. I am always looking for different ways to present material in order to "hook" students and keep them "hooked". Finding ways to keep 80 students involved in both my classes takes some doing depending on the topic. Because we are focusing in on acquiring and updating the basic needs of the school, funds are limited in other areas which is why I here today asking for help.

My students are at the stage that they are so invested in the "here and now". "What's the newest music group, song, book or movie" seems to be all they can talk about. Students miss things they can learn from books. Books give us a glimpse about how society functioned when it was written. What we can learn from these books are lessons that can be used for the future. Learn from the past so we can try not to repeat the same mistakes in the future.

Technology is growing rapidly and I want students to experience a small piece of it in my classroom and show them where this technology can take them. Show them how to work reading into their daily lives. It is a life skill and one that will keep us "young" even when we are "old". Presenting different ways a student can read will thrill students who are readers already and maybe get those who hate to read involved. I have acquired some of the technology through Donors choose and want to acquire some material to use with this technology. The materials I am looking for are books and audio books for independent reading that go with units that I have. For example, I am developing a pirate/ocean unit that ultimately will take the students from the past, to what is happening today, and what can happen in the future in these areas. I also included radio shows because this was a unique medium in which stories were presented to a large population in the past. These items can show how a population lived and grew and built things to where they are today. Hopefully if students know enough about the past they can take what they learned and work towards a better future.

Your help will empower my students to look for unique ways to use technology for reading in their everyday lives and learn some lessons about life in the process.
