SPSS: A Statistical View of the Community

I am a first year teacher at a rural high school. Many of my students do not have access to technology beyond the confines of the classroom. In the county in which I teach, the unemployment rate is above 16% and has been that way for quite some time. I teach math courses ranging from beginning to advanced Algebra to these tremendous students. In one course, statistics is a major goal and focus of the course.

In this environment, it is crucial to provide students with opportunities that mirror tasks in the adult workforce. Without exposure to many of these fields, students have no ability to understand the implications of a college education on their individual futures. I work to use project based learning to make the material more "real" to my students in order to illustrate the ways in which the tasks they are completing are used in our everyday lives. Though my passion for incorporating these activities into the lessons is in no short supply, funding for additional resources is at an all time low. I want to create projects which allow students to develop, execute and evaluate surveys and the emerging statistics to better understand their community through statistical modeling and linear regression.

I need five copies each of SPSS software and the easy to use SPSS for Dummies manuals to allow my students the creative license to perform their own research for these projects. SPSS is the most user-friendly statistical software package that many colleges and universities incorporate in multiple areas of the curriculum. Business, social science and hard science all incorporate statistical modeling. Therefore, exposure to this program at the high school level will enable students to make the transition to statistics at the collegiate level seamlessly.

In my short time at this school, I have found many students who are eager to succeed, but simply lack the appropriate tools to do so.
