The Aryan Girl from Lidice; Becoming Someone I Hate!

My students need 40 copies of "Someone Named Eva", by Joan M. Wolf.

There exists a strong animosity between my Bosnian and Serbian students that stems from the genocide of the '90s. I teach social studies, American History, to 7th and 8th grade students. Over 50 languages are spoken in our district. Seventy-five per cent of our students come from 1st and 2nd generation immigrant families from the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Asia, and India, South America and Mexico. English is a second language for many. Fifty per cent of our children receive assistance in our lunch program. Our district represents a "high-need community," representing Christians, Muslims, Hindus, and Jews. This teacher is a second career teacher, more easily able to provide life experience outside of the educational setting.

While discussing World War 1, my students were introduced to genocide through learning about the Armenian Genocide. This brought up many questions and fears as to why such events have occurred (21 in the 20th Century). Most importantly, identity formation is a critical event for junior high and middle school children. Given our American culture today, there exists clashes between the traditions experienced by our students from their and their family's country of origin, and everyday American life. Also, this teacher has taken an active role in writing our genocide and Holocaust curriculum, thanks to the willing collaboration with our district curriculum director. Nevertheless, resources tend to be scarce.

This book will benefit my students, in that it is a story about a young Czechoslovakian girl who was removed from her family by the Nazis, because of her "excellent" Aryan features. She is given a new name and is forced into becoming somebody she hates. Her battle is fighting to become her free self. I need to help my students build their own identity, free from prejudice, harmful parental influence based on cultural differences, and the influence of gangs in our community. Plus, I need a larger selection of new books on genocide and the Holocaust. The book is based on true historical factors. Hitler did perpetrate a program to raise and train Aryan women to breed future Nazis. Witnessing Eva's story through active learning experiences will help to grow the seed of a confident, personal identity for my students.

As business leaders and active American citizens, you can help empower my students to critical thinking about the perpetrators, victims, bystanders, witnesses and resisters of past genocides and those at risk in the present and future. As an added and important benefit, you will be helping students to become thriving leaders in high school, college, trade school, families, business and industry, and the helping-professions of our country. In addition, children need to know that all that is required for evil to succeed is for good men and women to do nothing (Edmond Burke).
