My students need a complete set of Stamp and Solve Math Activity Boxes, a set of Build-A-Story Problem flip books, Daily Math Stations for grades 1-6 and Hands-On problem solving books.
My students are master manipulators.
Well, at least they ought to be. See, I teach grades 2-4. My students start out thinking very concretely and are just moving to the abstract as they leave me. At this age, manipulatives are the ONLY way to teach math, and variety is the key.
However, as a charter school our budget is limited. This is where you come in. My students still love math, and any time a new activity goes out on the shelf it is an instant hit with students scrambling to be first in line. I want preserve that love of math by providing my students with an endless variety of hands-on math activities.
These materials will capture the imagination of my students and keep them coming back for more. I will start my students off with an engaging daily math warm-up using the Daily Math Stations. One set spans grades 1-3 and the other spans grades 4-6. Since my students span grades 2-4 and are all working on their own level, both stations will be up, and students will complete the Station that challenges their skills.
From there the students will have the option to choose any of the Build-A-Story-Problem flip books - a fun activity that makes the dreaded story problem less dreadful while targeting money, measurement, time and operations. Or perhaps the students will choose the write on/wipe off flip books - each one with its own manipulative set. There are five focusing on money skills and one each focusing on operations, place value, fractions and geometry. Or just maybe the students will chose to work with the Stamp & Solve Math activity boxes to practice money skills, geometry, fractions, place value, or problem solving.
So many choices, so little time!
