I am a Title I reading teacher, and I work with students in grades 3-5. We are a wonderful county public school in a small community. We are a district with one elementary, one middle and one high school all on one campus. Our student population is diverse in need. Students from the city also attend our school.

This year many of our students have really gotten hooked into reading. Our students eagerly check out books from our school and classroom libraries. This year students received copies of Mark Twain Award books. The problem is that many of these titles are too hard for our Title I students and other struggling readers. In order to encourage their desire to read these books, we want to offer digital copies of these stories. We want to be able to give our students the opportunity to hear fluent reading as well as read a book they are interested in.

In order to provide our students with the opportunity to read great literature and hear what fluent reading sounds like, we would like to be able to offer MP3 players with digital recordings of books. We have collaborated with our librarian and teachers to choose five copies each of quality reading material for each grade level. These books include Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Shiloh and Lightning Thief. We would then allow 3-5 students per grade level to be able to check-out an MP3 player, a copy of the text and the digital recording to listen to at home. We already have nine MP3 players but need more to make sure we have an equal number of players to lend out.

By donating to our project, you will help cultivate our students' love of reading. They will feel more confident in the classroom because they will be reading titles that other students in their classrooms are reading. You will also demonstrate to our students that our society values reading. This, in turn, will help support our families at home who may not be able to provide their children with quality literature experiences.
