Building Math Skills Block by Block

My students need 8 Math supplies, including place value activity kits with 4 base ten block sets, 4 addition and 4 subtraction machines and a place value pocket chart kit.

40% of my low income, Title 1 graders have one or more parent deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan. The parent at home is often struggling with day to day activities, my students need as much reinforcement from school as possible.

Going from 9 to 10 or 10 to 11 is a huge step, you must regroup. This struggling group of 1st graders just cannot make the jump from the ones to the tens place- we need hand-on, real life experience to get that concrete idea.

With the help of Base Ten Blocks, the students can make the connection that only 9 really fit into the ones place, when you add only one more, you now take up the tens place. The place value pocket chart and regrouping activity chart will allow children to work first as a whole class and then in small groups for reinforcement. The addition/subtraction machines will serve as a hands-on self assessment to check their basic skills.

The majority of the these first graders will make the jump to second grade very soon. Your donation will enable them to get a strong reinforcement of skills that they NEED to be successful not only in 2nd grade but each year after that.
