The “3 R’s” have morphed. It now means “R”eady, “R”espectful and “R”esponsible. I teach a class of seven preschool students with disabilities, including autism, in a rural high-need community.

We now know that one of the main reasons students with disabilities fail to succeed in regular education settings is their lack of knowledge, skills and abilities in the area of social development. How in the world can we help preschoolers with disabilities be ready, respectful, and responsible? It almost seems like a misnomer but that is exactly the point of our project.

In my class it is imperative that I not only get them ready for inclusion in kindergarten academic settings but also be successful in their relationships in our class as well as other settings in our school community. We need books and posters including Best Behavior Board Book Collection, Moods and Emotions Poster Pack and Book Set, Feelings and Emotions Paperback Library, and Good Manners Poster Pack and Book Set, Differing Abilities Book and Poster Set, Families Book and Poster Set. This project will allow us to to secure more materials in the form of books and posters to promote positive healthy social skills. Studies have shown that preschool is the definitely the place to start.

Your help will ensure that we have the materials necessary to foster discussion, provide examples, spark imagination and related activities that should lead to a greater understanding of positive social interaction. Better social skills will lead to more inclusion opportunities with non-disabled peers.
