Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I teach in a school that was recently authorized for the Primary Years Program in Texas. I teach a fifth grade, that consists of 60 students. Of these 60 students, more than half are either bilingual or ESL. Our school is in a high poverty area and most of our students qualify for free lunch.

Our students face many difficulties in their lives. They come from homes, which at times, do not provide them with their basic needs. The opportunities I want my students to experience are the chances to be cared for and chance to close their educational gaps. By providing the students with literature which makes a connection to their lives, it shows that we care about their success even if their family at home does not.

By reading the book "Gaia Girls Enter the Earth", the students will learn about how humans are responsible for sharing and conserving the finite natural resources of the world. The novel also helps students learn about responsibility and working together to make things happen in our world!

With the prices of our Nonrenewable Resources on the rise, it is time for our children, the future, to learn about the conservation our natural resources. You will make it possible for my students to become conscious of the fact that they are liable for the Earth and her natural resources!
