I teach a group of 18 fourth grade all-stars at a Title I school in a very high-need community. As a first year teacher and recent college graduate, I don't have much disposable income to spend on my students!

Because I want my students ready for fifth grade and beyond, I've introduced them to writing their thoughts on post-it notes as they read. I tell my students that "READING IS THINKING!" and have found that using post-its keeps them VERY ENGAGED in their independent reading. Students record their predictions about their texts, inferences about characters, wondering questions and connections on their post-its. Here's the problem: my school has few resources (especially with recent cuts) and I don't have the money to buy post-its to supply my classroom! Also, I have many students reading below grade level who would benefit GREATLY from listening to fluent reading of books on CD players. The reading series we use comes with CDs of the passages we read, but I have no way to play with them!

My students will undoubtedly benefit from having access to these resources. Post-its will aid in students showing their comprehension of texts. CD players will help my struggling readers improve their fluency!

With your help, the playing field can be leveled for my students, making it possible for my all-stars to have the resources that many students in higher-income areas have!
