I am a general science teacher from a rural county in North Carolina. We have had hits to our economy the past few years with major closings of textile plants and huge lay-offs from the local truck manufacturing plant. Our district has also been restructured to include an increasing number of minority students in the student population.
It is sad that our students do not have many life experiences to bring with them into the classroom. Some of our students have never even left the county for a vacation. As their science teacher it always amazes me the lack of prior knowledge our students have when entering my classroom setting.
I am sure you can remember your first year of high school. I remember being a bundle of nerves!!! The world was at our feet and we were full of hope for our future success in life. (Then, came the clicks… Would I fit in, would everyone like me) Finally, you would add the class load and you wonder how we ever made it through!
Now add an impairment to all of the stress and pressures of an average high school freshman’s life! That is where your generous contributions come in!
This year, I would love to help an incoming freshman that has a visual impairment. When I learned that I would have a child with a visual impairment in my earth science and biology class I immediately thought of the many needs this student would have in a science class. Most of what we do in class is project based and requires a large amount of research. How would he keep up? How would I make him feel comfortable, secure, and involved in everything that goes on in my class? Then I happened across a website that aids in turning text to speech for an IPOD. That was it! What every teenager wants, an IPOD. My student with your help could have the coolest tool around and keep up in class! I could create MP3 tracks for him of any pdf document. This means he could have any text read to him and he could read his textbook straight from pdf files imported to his IPOD. In addition, he would not feel awkward using this device because ALL teenagers desire them!
Please help my student become a successful science student! Create a home-like atmosphere for my incoming student! Help him feel confident and comfortable in his new school! DONATE TODAY!
