Calculators build the foundation for technology use. They can and should be integrated in daily math lessons. In my second grade classroom, I wish to accomplish this. I teach in an area where students don't have the luxury of extra school supplies or new technologies.

I have been trained in integrating calculators into a daily math lesson, and not just for "Fun Friday." I was given a set of 10 calculators for taking the class, but haven't been able to purchase enough for the whole class. I have had the kids share, and they are so excited about having something new and are ecstatic about math. However, it is difficult to make them share in groups of two to three with only one calculator.

I am requesting 20 calculators and a chart to store them in for my students. If granted, I will be able to use the calculators in nearly every math lesson. These are not just regular calculators. There are functions that reinforce place value, number patterns and skip counting, and even a problem solving function. Students are able to prepare for multiplication, decimals, and even practice math facts. This not only creates a foundation for higher-level mathematics, but also reinforces concepts in second grade. These calculators are a great way to integrate technology into teaching and learning.

Your help will insure that my students build a mathematical and technological foundation in learning. I believe that if students see that math CAN be fun, they may not grow to dislike it, as it seems so many kids do. These kids need to know that someone cares about them in their greater community. Your donation will help me and my classes for years to come, and hopefully will change students attitudes towards math.
