Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Currently I am a fifth grade teacher who is teaches in a school with predominantly English Language Learners (ELLs) and students who come from low-income families. Out of the 30 students that I have in my classroom, 18 of them are ELL's and one child who is new to the country.

Students in my class face many different challenges then those who are native English speakers that come from middle class families. Taking this into consideration I try my best, as a teacher, to give them every possible opportunity to make learning more meaningful and engaging. In the beginning of the school year I used my personal camera to take of things that were exposed throughout the units along with things that the students find in the community and posted them around the classroom for my students to learn from. This is very important and meaningful for my students because as ELL's, my students learn a lot visually. By doing this, I saw a lot of progress in my classroom. Once my camera broke, I couldn't do continue doing this for the children, which became frustrating for them.

Currently we use very antiquated cameras that have limited functions. These cameras can't even focus in order to get a clear shot. Every time I develop the film, the pictures seem to be blurry. My students need this Digital SLR camera because of the many functions it serves. We will be able to create PowerPoint presentations together, as we have in the past, and share them with other fifth grade classrooms, we can take pictures from around the school that will help our students enhance their writing assignments, we can also take a series of pictures showing how to do something (1st step, 2nd step, etc) and even use it for science investigation. Finally, we have started working on a long-range goal of creating a classroom yearbook for our students so that they may have evidence of their work throughout the year.

It will waste to the work they started from the beginning of the school year go to waste because we didn't have a camera to finish it. I want my present students, along with the fifth graders I will have in the future, to have the most exciting learning experience possible in order to motivate them to keep moving up in their educational careers. You can help me make that possible for my students. With your donation, you will give them the opportunity to create photo-journals, PowerPoint presentations, classroom yearbooks, and other projects that will help our students use their creativity and elicit more language skills.
