Math: That Four Letter Word!

My students need shape/color bean bags, number beads, sorting items, pattern books, a cash register, and gel writing boards to practice writing our numbers.

This project expired on September 30, 2009.

My class is comprised of 20 four & five year old Pre-Kindergarten students. I teach in a rural, low income, Title 1 school. The wonderful thing about pre-K students is that they have no idea what low income means or how it affects the school. They just know that school is fun and they want to be here.

Math can be a really ugly four letter word to a lot of students, but it doesn't have to be this way. Pre-k students are taught basic math skills such as sorting, matching, number recognition, counting, patterning, colors, and shapes. Using the same sorting or patterning items over and over gets boring and becomes a rote activity, instead of a cognitive, thinking activity.

Students of any age need a variety of activities and different ways to learn a skill. We need the added resources of sorting items, dominoes, number beads, pattern books, cash register, and gel writing boards to greatly enhance our math lessons. I want my students to experience that math can be fun and exciting. A student must have a solid understanding of the skills that are taught in pre-K in order to understand addition, subtraction, and other math skills.

With your donation, I can create a solid foundation of math skills with my students that can keep math fun and challenging. A variety of materials will keep their interest and ensure that my students are using active, logical thinking skills. Thank you so much for considering my proposal!
