Healthy eating and good nutrition are so important these days with the obesity issue that is plaguing our country. As an inner city pre-kindergarten teacher I am amazed at the number of children who are not familiar with fruits and vegetables, the importance of healthy eating and don't eat a balanced meal each day. I am interested in creating a healthy food area in our dramatic play center complete with a market store front and many different fruits and vegetables that the children can learn to identify and manipulate and a resource library to place in the area complete with books that teach about food and healthy eating. I do a fruit and vegetable investigation unit with my students where they taste and learn about a variety of different fruits and vegetables and I teach them the importance of incorporating healthy foods into their diets. Adding this hands on activity area will expose them even more to what fruits and vegetables and other healthy foods look like and it should encourage them to ask their parents to purchase healthy foods when they go to the grocery store with them. This is where I need some help - I am asking some generous donors to purchase a store front, healthy food manipulatives to use at the store and some food books so that the children can learn and discover the exciting world of healthy food and understand that there is more to the food world than food that comes in boxes. I hope that you feel as strongly as I do about the importance of teaching children about healthy eating and that at a young age hands on exposure is the best way to get this point across.
