Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Boys Leadership Academy is an after school program located at a Title I school designed to enhance self-esteem, academic performance, leadership skills and social and cultural awareness among third, fourth, and fifth grade boys. Once a week, the students meet to participate in team building activities and address issues that concern them, both individually and collectively. Each month they have a theme that helps to guide group discussions and activities.

The boys recommended and selected have shown leadership ability in the classroom and may have displayed discipline issues in the past. Most of our young boys in the leadership academy are from lower to middle socioeconomic strata, single parent families. Many of our boys have shown an interest in being professional athletes. With this in mind our school does not have many books of this specific genre.

As a result, we decided to start as book club for the boys to have them read books that build character, written by Tiki and Ronde Barber with Paul Mantell. We will need 30 copies of the book titled, Go Long! This will be the catalyst to encouraging our boys to enjoy reading books of about character, actively participate in book group discussions, and improve their love for learning and reading.

Mark Twain once said, "The man who does not read good books is no better than the man who can't." Your help will ensure that my students will not fall into either of these categories. Thank you in advance for helping this book club possible.
