Disability Awareness: Spreading the Word !

My students need 1-2 copies of 24 books about disabilities, including "Friends, No Matter What" and "In Jesse's Shoes: Appreciating Kids with Special Needs".

We teach students with moderate and severe disabilities 9th-12th and peer tutoring classes 11th-12th grades. Teaching in special education, we decided that our goal would be to improve disability awareness for individuals with disabilities in our schools.

Our plan is to gather children's storybooks that are about disabilities for peer tutors to read. They will be required to read 5-10 books: critique each book, pick their favorite book, decide the grade level, write a lesson plan, gather their materials, practice their presentations and go into an Elementary school in our county and teach the lesson. This is our way of increasing disability awareness in our school communities. Our other hope is that some Peer Tutors will decide they want to go into a field in education by having this opportunity to be creative and express themselves while increasing awareness.

We would appreciate your support by helping us to add to our book collection. We are hoping get the project up and running with about 250 11th and 12th graders beginning in August of 2009. In the past, I have had several students that went on to college to teach after being involved in such a heart warming activity. One is now a teacher of the deaf in our county.

Your support for the project will help my teenage students to see how important others feel the project. It will also let them see they too can make a difference in the lives of others.
