Yes We Can! ~ Barack Obama

My students need a class library of 42 inspirational stories about African Americans.

Mrs. Hernandez Pine View Middle School
Covington, LA Grades 3-5

I am a second year teacher getting ready to teach a 4th grade class full of inquisitive students. This school is a Title I school, meaning most of the children come from very low income families.

This school year has been an amazing learning opportunity for students across the country! It is so exciting as a teacher to have witnessed such change in America. I would love to continue using the election as a way to teach my students about the struggles and successes of African Americans, but I lack the materials. My students have a hard time appreciating the significance of Barack Obama's victory because they do not know the struggles minorities have had in the past. They also are not exposed to positive African American role models as much as I would like.

I have selected a variety of books featuring African American role models, including Harriet Tubman, Tiger Woods, and Barack Obama, of course. I want to use these books to show my students the struggles African Americans have overcome throughout America's history. I believe that all students need to learn about America's history on the subject, so they will fully appreciate Obama's victory. Furthermore, African American and Caucasian students alike should be able to read about positive role models in every career field, which is why I have chosen a wide variety of books. I can use these books to teach such important social studies topics while teaching reading and writing!

Please help my students understand how far this country has come in the last 200 years. Donating any amount to this cause will show my students (and many more to come) that this is a subject worth studying! YES YOU CAN!
