My district is a rural district in western Pennsylvania with a large population of socio-econmically disadvantaged families. Our district is widespread and oftentimes, students entering kindergarten do not see their school until the spring before they go to kindergarten and do not see it again until the attend kindergarten in the fall.

Students and parents alike are uncomfortable with education. I know that seems bizarre to many; however, our area was primarily a factory area until the factories closed. Many parents do not view education as a priority, and had negative experiences in their own education. Our district is working with early childhood programs to develop a better understanding of the education process. One of the best things we can do to help parents and children become more comfortable with education is to "open our doors" to them through webcams. Parents, children and early childhood care providers will be given a plethora of experiences throughout the school year, so they know they are welcome and are an integral part of our district.

In order to provide this service, we need to have webcams available to our pre-school and daycare providers, as well as the kindergarten teachers. Our teachers and the pre-k facilities will be given training on how to use webcams and kindergarten teachers will share lessons and routines and procedures with early childhood students, parents and educators. This opportunity will provide fidelity of treatment to our incoming students, through giving all students, parents and educators the chance to see kindergarten classrooms and lessons. It will be less scary for parents and students. The students will be more comfortable when they transition to kindergarten.

Your support will make it possible for children and parents in a low socio-ecomnomic are, to be empowered by knowledge. Many students live long distances from their school and parents are not comfortable with education. Giving them the opportunity to communicate with kindergarten educators and students will provide the critical support needed to give students a good head start in their education!
