Boom Bang Goes The Drum, Part 2

My students need 12 hand drums to demonstrate beat and rhythms with mobility.

"Boom-Bang goes the drum!" my students know all too well. Children in grades Kindergarten through Fifth all enjoy playing the classroom instruments, especially the drums. Our small, rural school in South Carolina is comprised of mostly impoverished families, most of which qualify for free or reduced lunch. And yet many of my music students rise above their dire circumstances and prove their many God-given talents through the Arts.

I recently attended an Orff workshop where I learned how to incorporate drums into nearly every activity I teach in my classroom. Although I recently acquired eight sets of bongo drums through another proposal here on Donors Choose, the workshop demonstrated that they are not as "portable" as simple hand drums for children to use while moving freely about the classroom.

Orff instruments are named after Carl Orff who created an entire curriculum surrounded by xylophones, metalophones, chimes and drums. The instructor at the day-long workshop emphasized that every student should have a hand drum for certain activities. And that's where you and Donors Choose come in. I would be able to implement all the great ideas I acquired at the Orff workshop.
