I teach pre-kindergarten in an inner-city public school in New York. My class includes foster children, children living in shelters, children living with single parents, and children shuffling back and forth between care-givers.

One of my goals is to help the children fall in love with great books. Most of my students lack the experience of being read to at home, which I try to make up for with lots and lots of story time with the full group (usually three times daily), and with small groups and individuals on demand (too many times to remember).

One of our absolute favorite stories is "Silly Sally" by Audrey Wood. This tale, about a girl who walks to town upside down and backwards, and the silly creatures she meets along the way, captures the hearts of my students every year. And with its word-play and rhyming text, which we sing, it's a natural for boosting the pre-reading skills of four-year-olds. I'm requesting the enlarged "lap-sized" board book edition of this story for each child to take home and keep for family reading.

This gift carries the potential to jump-start home reading by many of my families, as there is no way my students will allow "Silly Sally" to sit on a shelf! My hope is that as family members are drawn into enjoying it, it will translate into the reading of many books. As a plus, the lap-sized board book is strong enough to withstand the stresses of younger siblings, and should remain a staple of family reading for years to come. Thank you for considering this request!
