A Team Grows in Brooklyn

My students need 45 rolls of wrestling mat tape for the upcoming season.

A third year wrestling team that is fueled by student and coach desire, but not funding. I am a fourth year senior history teacher in a high-need inner-city public high school that is one hundred percent students of color. We have been given a grant to develop a wrestling team and this year will be our second as a varsity program after one year of developmental status.

We've got the wrestlers, who despite never having seen a true high school wrestling match, came out in droves to join a brand new athletic program. Word of mouth has spread, and we are looking forward to creating a true wrestling program that I and my assistant coach envision becoming a powerhouse in the upcoming season. Unfortunately, even though our school is enthusiastic about a new team, the administration will pledge no money for training equipment. All of our equipment has been provided by a great donation to our school district by a former wrestler who wants to see wrestling expand in America and inner city public schools in particular.

This is my fourth donation request, so I am asking all you former athletes and wrestlers out there to provide these upcoming wrestling superstars with essential materials to ensure our teams safety for this season. We're talking about a season's supply of wrestling mat tape. Last season we would not have been able to use tape at practice or our matches if not for generous donations from great people just like YOU!

Your donation will be a vital step in creating a true wrestling program in an environment where one otherwise would not exist. Our students crave after school athletic programs, and any additional resources would make each individual wrestler better off for it. Invest in our wrestlers, they are amazing young men who will show their gratuity by taking it to our opponents next season. Thanks to all who have read this, and I appreciate your support in advance.
