Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach Second grade in the Metro Atlanta, Georgia area. My students all reside in a high needs community, and our school budget is very tight. My students rarely have basic supplies such as pencils and paper on a day-to-day basis.

One of the subjects that my students are weak in is math. Actually, as a school, that is our major weakness. We have several initiatives to strengthen our students' basic skills and raise test scores. However, my second graders could still use additional assistance in the area of math. We put so much time and attention into working on their basic skills, and I know that with additional resources, they will feel more confident in what they are able to do as individuals.

My students need math story books to help drive home concepts that I am teaching them in class. In addition, they need math centers to individually reinforce the skills that I teach to the whole group.

Have you ever seen the look on a child's face when he or she "gets it"? With your support, my students will be able to strengthen skills that are taught in class. They will be able to read books to reinforce the concepts that I teach and also complete centers on an individual basis that will give them more confidence in their abilities.
