Weather Watch Wisdom at School. I teach 6th grade science and reading. I also teach an afterschool science club. We stay after school twice a week two hours a day. Our school is currently at 61% free and reduced lunch.

We are a low income school. Next year will be my first year teaching weather. My current after school science club has shown an interest in the topic when I let them choose a severe storm to research. I even had a child tell me that he wants to be a meteorologist when he grows up. We do not currently have any type of wireless weather station at the school. I believe this system would be beneficial to my after school program children as well as my future students.

I will need a weather watch board from Nasco. The board allows students to monitor, record, and interpret information from the National Weather Service. With the help of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather radio, they are able to learn about weather firsthand and to pursue this basic information about weather and other factors which produce our weather. Students listen to weather broadcasts and record data on the markable, erasable board. The board includes local forecast, extended outlook, national map, and weather data including time, temperature, pressure, humidity, wind speed and direction, sky, and precipitation. The radio receiver switches from loudspeaker for group listening to earphones for individual monitoring of the NOAA broadcasts. In case of severe weather conditions, the receiver automatically sounds off a siren telling students that a local weather alert is about to be broadcast and they should monitor it.

You will make it possible for my students to learn a variety of weather related topics with this project. I am sure it will spark a lifelong interest in meteorology.
