Creating A Positive Climate On The School Bus

My students need two Leapsters, carrying cases, and games to use as incentive for good bus behavior.

Students who normally do not have behavior problems at school often times display behavior problems on the school bus. I am a school counselor who is lucky enough to be able to closely work with the 15 bus drivers who work at my school. We are a K-5 building with approximately 550 students. To help prevent and decrease bullying our school participates in the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program.

As part of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program the staff at my school closely works with our bus drivers to help decrease the amount of bullying and behavior problems that is occurring. We work with our bus drivers to develop new behavior management techniques and also incentives for students who show good bus behavior.

We are very excited about our new idea to help improve behaviors on the school bus. Staff members from our school will keep track of points that students can earn for good bus behavior such as quietly lining up to get on and off of the bus, sitting appropriately on the school bus, and following directions given by the bus driver. Participating buses will be competing against each other. At the end of the month, points will be calculated and the bus with the most points wins. They will receive prizes which includes being able to play the Leapsters that we are requesting through this grant. Students will be rewarded for their good behavior, plus when they are playing the Leapsters they will be occupied therefore not disrupting or distracting others.

You will make it possible for our school to support our amazing bus drivers. Bus drivers have a hard job and definitely are not paid as much as they are worth. Your donation will allow for us to implement a new program which will in turn, help with behavior management on our school buses.
