I teach three seventh grade leveled classes of reading in a population of 78% free and reduced-lunch students. Our school, which focuses on reading comprehension and cultural proficiency, strives to provide each student with the best possible educational opportunities every day.

Konnichi wa! Each student does a double-take as I speak to them in Japanese. My students, who are currently completing a novel-unit on Hiroshima by Laurence Yep, are extremely interested in Japan and the Japanese culture. They beg me daily to teach them how to say things in Nihongo, or to write their names in Katakana, or to give them a Kanji character for some word they are interested in. To further their education of the Japanese culture, we would like to read Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. Since we have been learning about World War II, the students read about and learned about the Peace Memorial in Hiroshima. During our virtual field trip to the monument, a student found an address where we could send our completed paper cranes to be placed on the memorial dedicated to Sadako and other children killed by leukemia from the effects of the radiation. My students would like to read more about Sadako, and to have some "real" origami paper to create paper cranes for the memorial.

We need copies of the text, a teacher's activity manual, origami papers, and a copy of John Hersey's Hiroshima. This project, which has my students very excited about learning and reading about Japan, was actually THEIR idea! During a virtual visit to the Peace Memorial in Hiroshima, we found an address where we could send completed cranes to the memorial which features Sadako Sasaki, a victim of leukemia as a result of the A-Bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima. So, their idea set my wheels of thought in motion. How can I add reading, my knowledge of Japanese and the Japanese culture, and keep them interested at the same time? Origami. What could we read that goes with origami? Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. Currently, we are practicing folding paper cranes in anticipation of the "cool paper" (as the kids call it). We are also reading about other sad accounts of children who lived through the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the challenges they faced afterwords. This unit, which will be completed by the materials we need, will help my students learn and understand about other cultures. And, it IS bringing their idea to life!

You will make it possible for a project that my students are very interested in come to life. They will be learning about other cultures that will help them in their future studies. Please help me give them the materials they need to bring this opportunity to life for them.
