I am the lucky teacher of a wonderful second grade class at an at-risk, low income, primarily Spanish speaking school.

My students already struggle to communicate on the level of their peers, but because of their economic circumstances, and the inability of our district to fund our needs, I fear that my students will be lost in translation. That gray area of confusion that comes when we struggle to understand what others say, and eventually stop trying all together. ty. Through the power of visual media, I can translate ideas in an understandable way that might yet save my students' young minds from the inevitable indifference toward learning that plagues their whole community. We have precious little electronic equipment in our classroom; an old noisy overhead projector tops the list. With a new digital projector, I can combine the free resources of the Internet and the power of presentation to show my children a world outside of the dingy reality they live and breathe everyday. I could show them a window into unknown realities, into imagination and possibility; I want my students to see the world as it could be, not as it presently is. I want them to learn through the language of sight.

With an LCD projector, I can not only tell my kids of a brighter future, I can I show them. I can form my lessons in Power Point and present information, supplemented with video clips, pictures, things that not only make learning more fun, but also engage my students visually. As I said before, my students are mostly English language learners and so I can’t possibly express the importance of visual learning in my classroom. For my kids, seeing the lesson in an eye catching way could make the language barriers disappear, it could pique their natural curiosity that has for so long been hidden and lost in translation. Through the visual world of an LCD projector, fueled by the endless power of the Internet, my students could stop being the sort that we count out. My students could have a chance in education, a chance to succeed despite their disadvantages, a chance to see with their own eyes the words and ideas they have as of yet struggled to understand. My students have so much potential, they are still young enough to believe in things like hope, and still inquisitive enough to want to learn about the world around them.

It is only by overcoming the language barriers which isolate them, that we can truly build a bridge from the island of their indifference, into the endless horizon of a brighter future. With your donation I just might be able to show these kids who come from poor homes, from disenfranchised peoples, from crime and the brink of despair, that by learning they can improve everything around them. With your donation I can show these kids that the world wants them to succeed, to overcome their challenges and reach new heights. But most of all, with your donation I will be able to one day stand in my humble little classroom, in front of my fading whiteboard, facing the bright smiles of my students and say without words that their lives matter, and that their futures are limitless, and that because of donors like you, the barriers of language that have for so long suffocated their fragile little minds shall be over come.
