I have a classroom of 24 rambunctious kindergarten readers. I call them rambunctious not because they're out of control, but because they are so excited about their ability to read. Every day their reading abilities are improving, and they celebrate this fact by devouring numerous books throughout the week. Our daily period of independent reading is filled with the sounds of students quietly sounding out unfamiliar words, excitedly turning pages, and eagerly taking a fresh book from their individual reading box.

Students at our school are well on their way to becoming skillful, independent, lifelong readers. My classroom is well stocked with books that that I select for students to use during their daily independent reading time. Reading a book that is handed to you is fine, but it's nothing like the joy you experience when you discover a book on your own. My students need the opportunity browse the crowded shelves of a school library to find that special book with a story that they'll remember for years to come.

Our school has been fortunate to receive many, many donated books and other library materials. The problem is that they're currently packed away in dozens of boxes and shoved onto broken bookshelves in the back of an unused classroom. We need three new bookshelves to transform an unused classroom into a real school library. We have plenty of books to get us started, but we don't have the shelves we need to make the space usable.

By funding this project to buy bookshelves for a school library, you will help support my students' love of reading. The library will truly be a "school library" as other classrooms of kindergarten, first, and second grade students will also be able to use the space. You have the opportunity to positively impact the reading experiences of hundreds of students.
