Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Who doesn't love books in which you feel like you could be the main character? They draw you in and make you reflect on yourself while you read them! I am a third grade teacher in an urban Illinois public school. My class of 26 students is culturally and linguistically diverse. A majority of my students receive free/reduced lunch. A third of my students attend ESL classes daily. All of my students are very eager to learn everyday!

As a teacher, I feel as though it is my goal to instill a love of reading in my students. This is very important to me because a love of reading begins at a young age and continues throughout a person's life. In order to help students learn to love reading, it is important to provide a variety of books in your library. It is also important that the students can, at times, identify with the main characters. As more and more of my students begin to grab the chapter books, I have realized that there is a shortage of chapter books in my library in which the main character comes from the same ethnic backgrounds as many of my students. Currently, there are only a few books in which the main character is African American or Latino. Our classroom is a celebration of the many cultures within it. I want my chapter books to reflect this celebration as well. These books need to be relatable to the students, their experiences, and their culture.

Here comes Keena! I have recently discovered a new series of books about Keena Ford. These books are based on the story of a African-American girl and her daily life. Keena is funny, smart, and always trying to get through typical 8 year-old situations. She is someone many of my students can identify with. I also would like to add several books to my library about an African-American boy named Julian. His stories are endearing and allow for another African-American hero to be added to my library. Furthermore, I would like to be able to bring several Latino characters to my library. I want my students to feel proud of their heritage. I think such fictional characters would would be easily relatable to my students and further bring about a love of reading.

Your generous donation would help create a library in our classroom that my students could be proud of. My students could identify with heroes in chapter books that share the same culture as themselves. I think that such humorous stories like Keena Ford should be a part of every library. It allows students to find themselves within literature.
