Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am one of two music teachers working on our campus. I teach on the campus full time while the second teacher splits his time between two campuses to accommodate our large populations. We are a Title I campus which means we are on the lower end of the economic scale. The second music teacher and I serve students ranging from Kinder through 5th grades. Their music levels vary just as much. We service students labeled Gifted and Talented, special ed, bilingual and those in life skills programs.

One of the most important parts of my job is offering students a plethora of musical performance opportunities. We put on monthly music programs from Kindergarten through 5th grade. We also have choir performances and instrumental concerts as well. Our school has a decent sound system but it was set up to accommodate smaller groups that can perform on stage. With our large population and enrollment we must perform on the stage as well as in front of the stage, to the side of the stage and just about anywhere we can find to fit students. This causes a problem when it comes to accessing the sound system which is located back stage. It is hard to be out in front of the kids, guiding them through the program when the sound controls are located out of my reach. I often employ students to help in this area, but the current system is a bit hard for them to reach and for them to operate. These obstacles increase the stress and complexity of our monthly programs.

If we had a simple sound mixer that could be set up in front of the stage this would eliminate the need to run from one position to the next throughout the programs by allowing me to set up the sound controls anywhere they are needed for that particular program. Having a simple to use sound mixer would also allow my student sound managers to operate the sound settings with ease and allow them to learn more about what it takes to effectively run the sound for the these programs. It would also allow me to be where I am needed, in front of the students conducting and directing. With students in charge of the sound and within reach of me when they need assistance, it would ensure that the students on and off stage are successful and leave each program with a greater feeling of accomplishment.

Your help would ensure that our programs are successful in many ways. The mixer would allow the student managers to learn more about mixing live sounds for these programs and it would also allow me to remain in front of the students performing to guide them as well as leaving me in reach of the sound managers when my assistance is needed. With this mixer my students will be able to experience musical programs with a much higher level of success and applause. Music is powerful and when experienced with great success it can leave lifelong impressions on these young musicians. Your help would turn these programs into lifelong learning experiences.
