Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a media specialist serving over 500 students in grades seven and eight in a rural, high poverty setting. Our county has the second highest unemployment percentage in the state. Our state hast he second highest unemployment percentage in the nation. My students are depending on generous donors like you and innovative educators like me to enhance their educational experience and bring it beyond the boring basics. Let’s make a connection that has powerful, life changing results for these students.

Did you know that in 1996 the average college graduate has played over 10,000 hours worth of video games? (Interactive Videogames, Mediascope, June 1966). Can you imagine how much that number has increased since 1996? Just a few weeks ago, a student approached me and asked if I would be willing to sponsor an after school video gaming club. I had been hearing about video games being used in schools and libraries across the country. I told the student that we did not own any video game consoles and promised to look into the possibilities of a video game console and club. It did not take long for me to be convinced that video games would provide the rich and engaging learning experience that our students so desperately crave. Research proves that students who play video games actually perform better on tests.

Our students' educational experience will be enhanced, and their minds will benefit from the use of video system known as Wii at our school. There are plenty of learning opportunities for students as they read and sing song lyrics on a video game Karaoke like Wii's American Idol game. The students will benefit from other non-violent games that promote thinking, learning and creativity such as: Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader? My Word Coach and Freddi Fish, Guitar Hero and Mario Kart. Our students will use several non-violent video games as learning tools, behavior incentives and after school activities. Why not use the technology that our students love in an educational setting?

Your partnership will enable our students to experience the powerful interactive richness and engagement that video games can bring to learning. Your help will change the way many students look at school and has the potential to be life changing for many students.
