Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

American colonists and British soldiers have been clashing in the city of Boston. Which side will my students take? I teach remedial reading to third, fourth and fifth graders in a low-income community. I service a total of 50 to 60 students a year. My program consists of a pull-out small group situation to a push-in full class situation.

My students struggle greatly with content area reading for several reasons. Most of the content material my students need to master is taught through boring, old and tattered text books. Also, these text books are very difficult for my students to read and understand.

Supplementing easier to read high-interest trade books are just what the doctor ordered for my students to master the historical content necessary to meet New York State standards. We need five copies each of three book titles, including The Battle of Bunker Hill: An Interactive History to The Boston Massacre: An Interactive History Adventure and The Battle of Bunker Hill: An Interactive History. These books bring historical events to life in such a way that puts my students in the driver's seat during the reading of the Boston Massacre or the Battle of Bull Run or the Battle at Bunker Hill. These books give my students the opportunity to interact with history by having the reader choose an individual path to take through the event itself!

You will make it possible for my students to choose to be 'tarred and feathered' for not paying taxes or to dump pounds of tea into the harbors of Boston. Your help will empower my remedial readers to master the content necessary to meet all New York State Standards.
