Imagine students following the footsteps of actual scientists as they conduct cutting edge research in the field. Now, imagine students as an active part of that research, helping scientists conduct research and collecting data as they attempt to understand the world around them. All this is possible with a virtual field trip! As a high school science teacher, I teach geoscience (Earth Science and Physical Science) to freshmen and sophomore aged students. Within that population, many students are at-risk or learning disabled, and require alternative methods of teaching that are exciting and innovative and that teach them the foundations of science. I have developed a similar program through Arizona State University and NASA that brings real scientific challenges to real high school students.

Studies have shown that students who are actively involved in inquiry-based programs are more likely to have the critical foundation of science knowledge needed to succeed in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) careers. This technology and web site will demand the students to actively use the knowledge they receive in the classroom and apply it. Because budgetary constraints within our school district, students are at a disadvantage because they cannot participate in field trips that would expose them to the wonders of nature and science. The creation of a virtual field trip would help to bridge this deficit.

Using High Definition, handheld camcorders, students will be able to create virtual field trips that showcase science that is being conducted in their own back yards at National Parks by creating videos, science demos, and interviews with scientists. In the near future scientists will be using locations within the local National Parks to study how organisms can survive in extreme environments and how this will affect future space exploration. My students will be able to document their research and create a website that will be available for other teachers to use as a resource for their classrooms as well. Subsequent virtual field trips will follow scientists as they conduct their research to demonstrate the ongoing endeavor of scientific investigation. I have extensive experience in the creation of virtual field trips and programs that train high school students to analyze scientific data.

Your initial investment will serve as the seed money for future opportunities for my students to actively participate in authentic science research not only through virtual field trips, but through other programs that I am developing. The technology purchased will put students in the "driver's seat" by allowing them to gather and analyze data for scientists.
