Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My class consists of advanced third graders from three different elementary schools in a high poverty district. Our school also has a high number of ELL (English Language Learners) students. This is a fairly new program and I still don't have the materials I need to make learning truly meaningful to each student.

I believe in continuous progress. The students come to me as proficient readers, but that does not mean that they are done learning. My students are third graders and many are just beginning to read novels. I strive to expose them to great literature and outstanding authors to supplement our reading program; which, at times is too simple for the advanced readers in my class. The biggest problem I run into is not having the novels required to meet my students needs.

We need these small novel sets for literature circles during our city wildlife unit. Each novel was chosen for dealing with issues involving city wildlife that third graders can relate to. These issues include peregrine falcons, urban sprawl, and endangered species. These novels will both challenge and help my students learn to love to read.

By supporting this project, you will make it possible for me to take my students to a place of deeper understanding. You will be responsible for making our city wildlife unit both more meaningful and enjoyable.
